Garmin eTrex H not talking to your Mac?

Description

I thought I'd share my experience with getting a GPX file off a Garmin eTrex H onto an OS X Mac. After three hours I have my file and will be keeping the eTrex (which nearly left via the window). I used CalNorthern's USB to COM converter cable and downloaded the Prolific Serial to USB driver v1.4 for Lion and Leopard. Unfortunately CalNorthern supply their drivers on mini-CD which isn't much use for Mac users. After trying a few utilities for getting the Mac to talk to the Garmin I finally found LoadMyTracks which is not only up to date, but works. I can't promise you that if you combine these steps that your eTrex interrogation will be painless but if you have the same setup as me this post may save you some time (or the price of a new GPS unit). Thanks to Colin at CalNorthern for his expert help and suggestions.

Ps. Garmin’s Communicator web browser plugin, GPS Babel and GPS Connect all failed to talk to the eTrex for me.
